Because it was formally only accessible by climbing up the mountain, it is one of the longest inhabited villages in the country. It is the 28th Historic Site designated by the national Trust for Historic Preservation.

Hiking down from the village instead of taking the van is a little steep and rocky.

Trailhead Directions

Take I-40 west to exit 108, not 102 as the signs say, and go SW to the visitor center and PARK.

Actual Hike

The Sky City Cultural Center and Haak’u Museum serves as the reception center and museum for visitors to the Pueblo of Acoma. It has been continuously occupied since the thirteenth century.

There is a nominal charge for the van ride to the top of the mesa village and tour of the village. Although visitors can hike down from the village they are not allowed to hike up to it but must take the Van.

Reservations are recommended for groups of 15 or more. To make a reservation for a group tour, contact our Operations Manager Melvin Juanico at (505) 552-7861, or email .
