LVSC Hike Report
Hike Distance (mi): 5
Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge - Socorro Region
Elevation Change (ft): 300
Total Uphill (ft): 350
Total Downhill (ft): 350
Although 11 people were signed up today only 5 showed up at the LVSC at the stated time of 8:00. 4 of the hikers did not realize that when there was a change from one hike to another hike that their names were automatically transfered to the new hike and if they did not want to go on the new hike they needed to post off.
We left at 8:17 and later called the center at 9:00 to have them tell the late arrivals that they could meet up with us at the Sevilleta Visitor Center.
Our first stop was at the Bernardo Waterfowl Area. Thanks to Linda Kimmel’s sharp eyes we spotted 3 deer in the far distance. This was a pleasant surprise for all of us. We stopped at two platforms for observations and took a short hike near one of them.
Next we went to the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge where we started our hike after touring the museum. We got plenty of exercise climbing to the top of the mesas. In two pictures you can see a fenced area in the distance with many metal enclosures. This we found out is what the NM Tech. uses to experiment with different explosives. After a realatively tough hike, we were all ready for our lunch at the Socorro Springs Restaurant.
Although Sky, who was our acting hike leader, gave us the option to do a 1.8 mile hike at Sevilleta after lunch, we decided to start back to the center to get back by 5 PM.
Thanks to Sky for doing a great job driving and leading and Frank and Linda Kimmer for their pictures.
