Trailhead Directions

From Albuquerque take I-40 east. Take exit 175 south to Tijeras. From the traffic light in Tijeras go south on NM 337 (Old Highway 14) for approximately 7 miles to Pine Flat Picnic Area, [PARK-PINE FLAT] (0.0 mi) turn left, then bear to the right. Be careful about where you park (not in the area set aside for horse trailers).

Actual Hike

This trail starts at the Pine Flat trailhead. After a short distance, veer off to the right at DEADMAN (0.4 mi). The trail continues with a gradual uphill among tall pines. At the next junction, go right (west) on to Southern Crossing [SOUTHERN (1.4 mi)] which goes past a deserted picnic area. After that, you CROSS (1.6 mi) the road where caution is needed. The trail then winds through a lot of scrub oak. Have lunch at or near the intersection with the Cajun Pine trail. On the way back, there is an OPTIONAL (6.3 mi) slight variation where we pass a lot of rusted out tin cans (the Forest Service is currently considering those as artifacts).

Hike data were determined using a Garmin GPSMap 64 and Garmin BaseCamp’s DEM for TOPO US 24K Southwest.
