Report:
High winds were forecast for today. I called Palo Duro Senior Center to find out how many were signed up – 13! There were several no-shows, but 10 hardy hikers ended up going on this hike. And we did the whole thing! The trail was easy to follow with helpful signs at trail junctions. We followed the Chalkdust Trail to start, then went on the Strip Mine Trail to the Overlook (at the far end of the hike). Great views to the south and west. I hadn’t been up there in years. To my right was a clear trail going in the direction of the Fun Rocks. We took that trail down, veering to our right to avoid a scary part of the trail, but at the end were the Fun Rocks. It was easier to go down that way rather than to go down on the same trail as we came up. After a snack, we headed back taking the Strip Mine trail. The wind wasn’t as bad as expected. We arrived back at the van around noon. It was cold, so we didn’t take many photos. (Also see the photos at the bottom of the hike description at https://aschg.org/hike-page/?id=19572.)
Thanks to Stu for driving and Patricia for sweeping.
